Income must generally be reported even when a tax document is missing. Before estimating anything, confirm which form you expected, who should issue it, and whether a copy is available through an official online account.

First contact the issuer

  • Ask the employer, payer, bank, broker, pension administrator, or platform whether the form was issued.
  • Confirm your mailing and email address.
  • Request a corrected form when the name, tax number, income, or withholding is wrong.
  • Keep pay statements, year-end summaries, invoices, and bank records that support the amount.

For a missing U.S. form

The IRS provides specific procedures for a missing or incorrect Form W-2 or Form 1099-R, including contacting the payer first. If the form still is not available, the IRS may provide instructions for Form 4852. If a later form differs from an estimate used to file, an amended return may be required.

For a missing Canadian slip

Many current and prior-year slips may appear in CRA My Account after the issuer submits them. Contact the issuer directly when an expected slip is missing. Auto-fill My Return only imports information already available to the CRA, so review the result before filing.

If the document arrives after filing

Compare it with the filed return. In the United States, a correction may require Form 1040-X. In Canada, wait for the notice of assessment and use an available return-change method rather than filing a second original return.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave income off because I did not receive a form?+

No. A missing information return does not automatically remove the obligation to report taxable income.

Is a form shown online always complete?+

Not necessarily. Review online information against your own records and contact the issuer about missing or incorrect details.
