A reliable VAT return starts with reconciled records, not with figures typed directly into EmaraTax. Review the assigned tax period, close sales and purchase ledgers, test VAT treatment, and leave time for payment to reach the Federal Tax Authority.

Confirm the filing deadline

The FTA states that VAT returns and related payments are generally due within 28 days after the end of the tax period. The standard tax period is often three calendar months, although the FTA may assign a different period. Always confirm the exact dates in the business's EmaraTax profile.

Reconcile the return before filing

  • Match taxable sales to the general ledger and issued invoices.
  • Separate standard-rated, zero-rated, exempt, and out-of-scope activity.
  • Review imports and reverse-charge transactions.
  • Match recoverable input VAT to valid tax invoices and business use.
  • Reconcile credit notes, bad-debt adjustments, and prior-period corrections.
  • Compare VAT payable with the balance sheet tax accounts.

Review evidence for input VAT

An expense in the accounts does not automatically make its VAT recoverable. Confirm that the business holds the required evidence, received the supply for business purposes, and has applied any recovery restriction or apportionment rule that affects the transaction.

File and pay as separate steps

Submitting the return does not itself settle the liability. Schedule payment early enough to reach the FTA by the deadline, use the correct payment reference, and retain both the filing acknowledgement and payment confirmation.

Maintain an audit-ready file

The FTA states that VAT invoices issued and received generally must be retained for at least five years. Keep the return workings, transaction listings, reconciliations, invoices, customs records, adjustments, and submission evidence together for each period.

If you discover an error

Do not automatically change a later return to offset an earlier mistake. Review the FTA's current error-correction rules and determine whether the issue requires a voluntary disclosure or another permitted correction method.
